Northern Neck News April 9, 1937 page 4, col.3 "A Tribute of Love"
A tribute of love to a dear one - Mrs. Bessie L. FONES, beloved wife
of W. C. FONES, who passed to the Great Beyond at her home at
Foneswood, Virginia, March 21st., 1937. For years she has been a
helpless invalid but bore her sufferings with a patience and
resignation beautiful to see. The immediate cause of her death was
an attack of pneumonia of two weeks duration. Everything was done,
with the constant care of doctors and nurses, but the Lord was ready
to take her after years of suffering to be with him. She was so
patient and cheerful thru all her long illness-never complained or
murmured at her lot. One of the sweetest invalids I have ever known.
I always felt rebuked after being at her bedside that I had ever
complained at anything. She seemed perfectly resigned and
happy-always so glad to see friends and always with a smile. She was
a faithful member of Ephesus Christian Church and always in her place
until her health gave away. Her remains were taken to her church
which she so dearly loved where funeral services were conducted by a
former pastor Rev. C. N. WILLIAMS of Washington, and assisted by Rev.
John A. TATE, of Richmond, another former pastor, both of whom spoke
lovingly of the beauty and sincerity of her Christian life. Mrs.
Malcolm SCATES, of Washington, sang sweetly the deceased's favorite
hymn-"In that land where they never grow old." Mrs. Charles HARRIS,
Jr. of Montross, also very feelingly sang "goodnight." Beautiful
flowers covered the casket and rostrum, attesting to the love of her
many friends. She was a dear lover of flowers and always wanted them
around her in life-so it was very fitting that she should have them in
death. Her body was tenderly laid to rest in the chruch cemetery to
await the finalcall. Beside her husbank sheis survived by four sons,
Messrs Homer and Bradford FONES of Foneswood and Hundley and Willard
FONES of Washington, two daughters Mrs. R. F. SMALLWOOD of Montross
and Mrs. Earle PURKS of Colonial Beach. Our sympathy is with them
all - but especially with the bereaved husband who so tenderly and
faithfully cared for her during herlong illness-- "Thou art gone dear
one, but the lamp still burns across our path. Death doth send a
shadow but thy loving memory shines without end." One who loved her.
Dates of birth and death taken from tombstone located at Ephesus
Christian Church Cemetery, near Foneswood, Westmoreland County, VA.,
E. Bruce Fones.
