[4] He lived at North Kingston. He was a prominent sea captain and naval
officer. The Rode Island records show that he commanded the colonial
sloop "Tartar" as early as Feb. 17 1746 (Civil and Military List,
Rhode Island p.100). The sloop mounted fourteen guns and twelve
swivels and had a crew of ninety men, in 1744, under Captain Fones.
He took part with his vessel in the expedition to Canada, sailing from
Kingston in May 1747 (Civil and Military list, Rhode Island, p.1220.
