His miltary action included the Battle of Leyte Gulf, which remains as the largest naval battle ever fought. Near the end of the war, he met Marjorie BARFIELD in Norfolk, VA., whom he married Feb. 17, 1946. graduated from the U. of TN. in 1949 with a degree in agriculture. His first job after college was the Cumberland County Extension Agent in Crossville, TN., where her worked on many of the local youth 4-H projects. In 1956, he joined the Ralston Purina Co., where he worked until he retired in 1984. This job eventually brought him to Franklin in early 1970. Max won several national awards throughtout his career. Max was a faithful member and deacon of First Baptist Church. One of his great joys was teaching the men's Sunday school class, which he did for more than 50yrs. He also was a member of the Reflecction Shoir. Many people in the community will remember Max for his love of tennis. Max won many tournaments throughout his life, but mostly enjoyed teaching young and old the game of tennis. He also served on the local Parks Board. He was a son of the late William Henry FONES and Elvy Lee Stewart FONES. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Virginia Lee FONES. FONES, Sr., 93 died Dec. 23, 2010, after a long illness. He served on the Tennessee Supreme Court from 1973 to 1990 both as Chief Justice and as an Associate Justice. During his tenure, Justice FONES and the four other Justices with whom he served were known as a progressive court, setting new standards in Tennessee for the practice of law. The Court established new standards in cases involving comparative negligence, womens's rights, First Amendment rights and the death penalty. Bill FONES was born in Friendship, Tennessee, and with his prents moved to Memphis during the depression. He grew up in the Normal neighborhood and first acquired hie life-long love of golf while caddying at Galloway Golf Course. They met by happenstance twice in one day before he left for overseas, once at the office where she worked and a second time that night at the Peabody Skyway. They decided that it was destiny. He was 67. Levin waas under going surgery at St. Mary's Hospital to treat rheumatic heart disease, a degenerative valve problem he carried since he was 8, said his wife Martilla Levin. The judge was born in Oelwein, graduated from Drake University and practiced law in Newton and Monroe before becoming a judge in 1982. He founded the Polk County Family Law Mediation Program, which required divorcing parents to have mediators during child disputes. "He was a brilliant jurist who exhibited the highest degree of civility on the bench." said Fifth District Chief Judge Arthur Gamble. "He was much beloved by his colleagues on the bench and bar, and he will be missed by all of us". Jack Levin retired and moved to Florida in 2000 due to health issues. He spent summers in Clear Lake and remained active in mediation after moving south. He was a certified court mediator and served as a volunteer in Florida's 20th Judical District until his death.
